French Terracotta Lion Sculptures by Mandeville-Combeleran 1880-1905

French Terracotta Lion Sculptures by Mandeville-Combeleran 1880-1905

An extremely rare and exceptional pair of terracotta lions with original plinths and glass eyes, created in the South of France in Castelnaudary by the famous Mandeville pottery which was established in 1880.

In a seated heraldic sejant stance. The Lions would make a grand dramatic statement in your interior or a protected position within a garden.

Earlier works like these bear the makers stamp of ‘Mandeville-Combeleran’ (1880-1905). This was to be followed by ‘Mandeville-Bernier’ in 1905 until the company’s closure in 1935.

Mandeville Pottery based in Castelnaudary (Aude) in the south of France was one of the most important makers of its time.

Additionally it is very rare to find a pair of lions, on their original plinths, and even rarer to come across models with their glass eyes - making them very important collectors pieces.
